YouTube movies are not simply a collection of pets and children doing strange things. We may be being visited by UFO's, keeping aliens locked up in secret bunkers or have governments that are keeping sinister truths hidden from us, however I believe that the value of YouTube movies lies elsewhere.
Many years ago I worked in London's west end and every day, on my way to work, I passed a street vendor selling newspapers. Every day he would yell to the passing crowd to get their attention. After a few months it became clear to me that he was saying, or yelling, the same thing every day.
One day I could contain my curiosity no more. I approached him, bought a newspaper and asked, 'You shout the same thing every day, don't you?', 'Yes' he replied. My next question was 'Do you mind telling me what it is, exactly, that you are saying?' I'll never forget his reply, 'I shout HORRIBLE NEWS, TERRIBLE SCENES - because it always is!'
Nothing has changed, we are bombarded all day with news of dreadful things happening all over the world. We now have twenty four hour rolling TV news, along with endless analysis of grim situations and, often, how they may get even grimmer. This never ending flood of negative information is pumped into our conscious and subconscious minds all day every day.
I am not suggesting for one moment that we should ignore the plight of people who find themselves in dreadful circumstances and I would advocate giving generously to the appropriate charity. My concern is the effect that all this depressing information has on our outlook on life and our general demeanour. People react to positive and happy situations by being happy and positive.
TV is also responsible for feeding us with soap operas, reality TV, quiz shows, talent shows and so on. We have all heard the term 'garbage in, garbage out' when it comes to computing, I contend that the same situation exists with human beings. Even good quality TV involves us in watching other people fulfilling their dreams. A particularly insidious form of vicarious living.
Surveys show that the average American watches around four hours of TV a day, twenty eight hours a week, about one thousand five hundred hours a year. That means that the average viewer is glued to the screen for two months of every year of their lives.
It is a staggering fact that YouTube movies amount to more hours of content than has ever been produced by Hollywood. In amongst the pointless garbage there is a huge amount of truly useful information from the 'how to' kind of videos to words of wisdom from some of the worlds greatest thinkers, entrepreneurs and motivational speakers.
Never before has billions of people, across the globe, had easy access to this sort of guidance. If you are a business man do you think that you might learn something from Donald Trump or Sir Richard Branson, if you want to find your way in life could Bob Procter or Tony Robbins help you?
So turn off the TV and turn on YouTube movies if you want to be happier, wealthier or wiser.
