The once shy British boy David Beckham later on becoming one of the world's best football players, an iconic public figure, a top UK millionaire, and an influential personality. David Beckham's early soccer talent was evident, but in his early age, nobody could believe that a 20-year-old boy would be selected in one of the UK's top football club-Manchester United-and brought the team various victories.
His father knew that his son could bring a miracle once he goes through continuous practice and overcome obstacles in his early age.
In his early years of playing football, young Beckham got a chance to attend a training session at FC Barcelona while attending the Bobby Charlton's football school. When Beckham's mother told that Manchester United wanted to try him, small scout Beckham stood and started crying because of happiness.
David Beckham is one of the most iconic athletes who also became one of the world's most popular brand endorsers. He was the captain of England national team from 1998 to 2009 and led England through difficult times in several FIFA world cup events. He also played as a midfielder in Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Los Angeles Galaxy.
David Beckham was born in Leytonstone, East London to a hairdresser mother named Sandra West and kitchen fitter father, Ted Beckham. Beckham came from a Jewish family, a religion he has been practicing throughout his entire life. This British Footballer sports a tattoo proclaiming his religion, which he hides during games by wearing a full-sleeved shirt as a show of respect to players who might have different beliefs.
It was a bright day on July 08, 1991 when 16-year-old Beckham moved from his home to join the training division of European top club Manchester United. Beckham focused on his free kicks, corner and penalty kicks, and important tackles. Beckham joined Manchester United in 1993. He was voted as a young player of soccer world in 1997. In March 1997, he met Victoria. Once during an interview, Victoria was shown Beckham's photo, to which she coolly remarked, "Gorgeous."
In 1992 at 17 years old, David Beckham started his professional career by joining the Manchester United. In the Manchester United, Beckham won 2 FA cups. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 1999 and Premier League 6 times.
Beckham appeared in England national team for the first time in 1996. He was only 21 years old when he joined the England football team. He was then selected as captain of the England team in 2000, until the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He played a total of 58 games as English captain during the time that he was a part of the England team in the FIFA World Cup. Beckham earned his 100th cap on March 26, 2008 in their game against France.
On January 24, 1998 Beckham proposed to Victoria at Rookery Hall Hotel in northwest England with a diamond ring worth $65,000 and she topped it with an $80,000 ring for Beckham.
On July 04, 1999, Beckham and Victoria married in Dublin, Ireland. It was a lavish marriage ceremony with 236 guests. The bride and groom had velvet thrones of gold plates and crown. The event coverage had an estimated cost of about $1.5 million for British Tabloid OK! And the total cost of the ceremony was at $800,000.
It was in 2001 when Beckham became the national hero again during a FIFA World Cup match. Also in FIFA World Cup 2002, England qualified in the finals only because of last minute free kick goal of Beckham while playing against Greece.
The year 2001 to 2002 was the best season for Manchester United player Beckham, wherein he scored 11 goals in 28 matches and scored a total of 16 goals in 42 Champion's Game.
However his injury during the 2002 season weakened his relationship with Manchester United manager. Also in an incident during their game against Arsenal, Alex Ferguson threw a boot towards Beckham after the United's defeat from Arsenal causing Beckham to endure wounds on his eyes that resulted in several stitches.
In 2003, Beckham left Manchester United and joined the Spanish club, Real Madrid. During his four-year seasons in Real Madrid, he was the key player to win the La Liga Championship for the team. He left Real Madrid in 2007 and joined the Los Angeles Galaxy, one of Major League Soccer's clubs.
While in Real Madrid, Beckham had to wear no. 23 shirt although he was wearing No. 7 shirt in Manchester United because 7 was assigned to Real Madrid captain Raul. He also became the best marketing tool available during his tenure in Real Madrid.
In August 2003, Beckham won the Spanish super cup for Real Madrid against RCD Mallorca. He scored the final goal and brought 3-0 goals for Real Madrid. Beckham didn't require more time to settle because of league stars Iker Casillas, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo, Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. He scored five goals in his first 16 games for this Spanish club.
In 2004 while Beckham was playing for Real Madrid in Spain, an intruder along with petrol can enter his home. Security guards stopped him before he successfully blasted Beckham's home. During that time, their new coach, Jose Antonio Camacho, resigned after his three weeks of joining when Real Madrid moved to 8th position in La Liga. In 2004, the team moved to second league spot and finished their season as a runner-up.
In 2005, Beckham established football academies around the world, particularly in Los Angeles and London. He was named British Book Awards judge in 2006. In 2005 to 2006 seasons, they reached the last 16 of the Champions League series after Arsenal defeated Real Madrid and also settled in second place in La Liga after Barcelona. During the 2006 season, Beckham played nine matches for the club and seven among them were lost.
Real Madrid announced on 10 January 2007 that David Beckham would no longer remain with the club after the end of his four-year contract. Later, however, one Real Madrid director said that the speech was not correctly translated and what they really meant was that the contract had not been renewed.
The following month, he was called by Real Madrid coach to play against Real Sociedad and Beckham recovered his fame after scoring an equalizer goal from 27 yards and finished the game with a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid. During the 2007 La Liga season, Beckham played his last match for Real Madrid, and he was lucky to bring 3-1 win against Barcelona. After Beckham's injury, Jose Antonio was called and he scored two goals and brought the La Liga title for Real Madrid.
In 2007, it was announced that Beckham would be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy. When Beckham started playing for the MLS team, Los Angeles Galaxy club found more viewers that rejuvenated their business worldwide.
Beckham signed loans with AC Milan and Italy in 2008 and 2009 while he was playing with LA Galaxy. In November 2011, Beckham joined an elite group of players and won three leagues in three different countries. During Beckham's captaincy with the team, Los Angeles won their MLS Cup too.
On 28 March 2009, Beckham surpassed the 108 caps of Bobby Moore and became the all-time outfield player. Till his 115 international appearances, Beckham told that he didn't want to retire from football. Due to an injury, he missed the FIFA world cup 2010 and has not played with England after October 2009.
Beckham needs ten more caps to break the record of Peter Shelton, who holds 125 caps. In his career, two times he became FIFA World Cup Player of the Year. After taking into account his salary and advertising revenue in 2004, David Beckham proclaimed the world's highest paid footballer.
He is the first British player who was able to play 100 Champions League matches. In his Premier League rating, he is the third most assist provider with 125 assists in total 265 appearances. In 2007, he became the highest paid footballer in the history of MLS league, with a salary of $6.5 million per year. Beckham is married to Victoria Beckham, a member of the famous pop group the Spice Girls, and the couple has four children.
In 2008, David Beckham told that in his school whenever his teachers asked him what he would want as a career when he became older, he always replied that he wanted to become a footballer.
He also said in his book "Both Feet on Ground" that he attended the church with his parents and sisters every Sunday. Beckham's parents traveled to Old Trafford only because of their craze for Manchester United. His father educated him through Bobby Charlton's football school in the hope of honing his son's football prowess.
In 2008, David Beckham underwent training with Arsenal before returning to his LA Galaxy club. With his return to Galaxy, Beckham scored a goal against the San Jose Earthquakes within a few minutes into the game. Soon, Galaxy performance boosted up and they defeated Kansas Wizards by 3-1.
Beckham was also loaned to play for AC Milan first in 2008 and second in 2009. In July 2011, Beckham and Victoria announced that they have become parents to a new baby girl named Harper. Also in 2011, Beckham returned to Los Angeles Galaxy and won the 2011 MLS cup for the club.
Beckham helped Galaxy to set fourth place in the MLS western 2012 season where he scored seven goals along with nine assists. He also announced that 2012 would be his final MLS cup year. Being in the team made him one of the major reasons that the Los Angeles Galaxy won the 2012 MLS cup. Even the company CEO said in a statement that Galaxy became known as a team in which David Beckham is now playing and told that their world has tremendously changed.
David Beckham, as an extraordinary person, supported charities since his years in Manchester United and Real Madrid. He supported Elton John Aids Foundation, Unite for Children, Unite Against Aids, and UNICEF. He is a spokesman for Malaria No More and in 2005, made a cameo appearance with Raul and Zidane in the football film "Goal!"
